Island Peak Trek – A Classic Himalayan Climbing Adventure
Known locally as Imja Tse, Island Peak (6,189m) is one of Nepal’s most iconic trekking peaks. This is an accessible yet truly rewarding Himalayan summit adventure that blends high‑altitude trekking, glacier travel, and a taste of real mountaineering. This journey takes you deep into the heart of the Khumbu, following the legendary trail toward Everest before branching into the dramatic Imja Valley, where Island Peak rises like a white pyramid above the surrounding glaciers. Your adventure begins with the exhilarating flight to Lukla and the gradual ascent through Sherpa villages, pine forests, and the turquoise Dudh Kosi valley. As you climb higher, the landscape opens into sweeping views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and countless other Himalayan giants. Carefully planned acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar and Chhukung allow your body to adjust while giving you time to explore monasteries, ridgelines, and viewpoints that define the Everest region.
Beyond Dingboche, the terrain becomes wilder and more remote as you approach Chhukung and the base of Island Peak. Here, you’ll train with experienced climbing guides, learning the essential skills needed for a safe and successful summit attempt. The climb itself is a thrilling mix of rocky scrambling, fixed‑line ascent, and glacier travel, culminating in a narrow summit ridge with breathtaking views across the Khumbu, including Lhotse’s towering south face. After reflecting on your achievement at base camp, the return journey leads you back through the beautiful villages of Pangboche and Tengboche, with time to enjoy the forests, wildlife, and mountain panoramas from a fresh perspective. The trek concludes in Lukla, where you’ll celebrate with your team, on an accomplishment that combines physical challenge, cultural immersion, and the unforgettable experience of standing high in the Himalaya.
This itinerary offers a balanced, well‑paced approach to Island Peak – ideal for trekkers seeking their first Himalayan summit or climbers looking to expand their mountaineering experience in one of the world’s most inspiring mountain landscapes.

From Tengboche, the trail leads through forests of birch, juniper, conifers, and rhododendron to Deboche (3,820m), a small settlement with its own monastery. Continuing on, the path follows the Imja River, passing long stretches of Mani walls. After crossing the river, the trail climbs steadily past intricately carved Mani stones toward Lower Pangboche (3,930m). We pass the historic Pangboche Monastery – one of the oldest in the Khumbu – which you may choose to visit briefly. From here, the route ascends through open alpine meadows and scattered stone walls to Shomare (4,010m), then continues through Orsho before reaching Dingboche (4,410m), a windswept village tucked beneath the towering faces of Ama Dablam and Lhotse. As we continue, the path leads toward the glacier moraines, with Lhotse and Ama Dablam rising dramatically above us. After passing the small settlement of Bibre, Island Peak comes into view. From here, the trail crosses several icy streams before a short, gentle walk brings us into Chhukung. The village offers striking views, with Ama Dablam and the Amphu Labsa range dominating the skyline. Overnight Tea House. Trekking 3–4 hours.
Day 9: Acclimatisation – Climb Chhukung Ri (5,550m) and return to Chhukung
Today is dedicated to acclimatisation, and the climb up Chhukung Ri will help our bodies adjust to the higher altitude. Chhukung Ri rises directly above the village, and the ascent is steady with some easy scrambling near the summit. From the top, the views are exceptional – Ama Dablam and Amphu Labsa stand prominently across the valley. After taking in the panorama, we descend the same way back to Chhukung for the night. Rental gear and equipment is available here, if needed. Overnight Tea House. Hiking 2-3 hours.
Day 10: Chhusang to Island Peak Base Camp (5,150m)
The trail to Island Peak Base Camp is fairly steep from the start. We begin by climbing south before turning east toward the main valley. The path then winds beneath the southern flank of the Lhotse Glacier moraine, gradually leading us onto a streamside trail. To the southeast lies the route toward the Amphu Lapcha Pass, while our path continues through a crisscross of moraines from the Imja and Lhotse glaciers. This leads us into a broad valley that curves along the southwest side of Island Peak. We spend overnight at Island Peak Base Camp. Overnight Tented camping. Trekking 3-4 hours.
Day 11: Pre‑Climb Training at Island Peak Base Camp (5,150m)
Today you take part in a practical pre‑climb training session led by our guides. You’ll practice climbing and descending rocky slopes using harnesses and fixed‑line equipment, and learn key skills such as knot‑tying, belaying, and rappelling. This is especially valuable for first‑time Himalayan climbers. A final gear check is completed, and you pack for the summit push. Overnight Tented camping.
Day 12: Island Peak Base Camp to Island Peak Summit(6,189m), back to base camp (5,150m).
A very early start (around 2am) begins our summit push, it’s essential to reach the top before midday when strong winds often build. The trail climbs above base camp across sandy and grassy slopes before becoming boulder‑strewn, eventually narrowing into a steep rock gully with a few short steps to negotiate. Emerging onto a ridgeline, we traverse toward the glacier snout and the guides will fix a rope when required. A steep snow slope leads to the summit ridge, where fixed lines and man ropes are used for safety. We will use fixed lines after successfully climbing on rock. The length of the rope will usually be of 350m. However, the length depends on the time of the season and the crevasses. There are two newly formed crevasses which are approximately 3 and 4 meters long. We will be using ladders to cross them. After enjoying the summit views, and taking photographs, we descend to Island Peak Base Camp where the rest of our crew wait for us to celebrate our successful Island Peak climb. Overnight Tented camping. Trekking 10-11 hours.
Day 13: Island Peak Base Camp to Pangboche (3,985m)
Today’s trek is gentler as we descend to lower altitudes. We retrace our steps through the broad valley of the Khumbu Khola, passing the picturesque Sherpa villages of Orsho and Shomare. From here, we have two options: follow the main trail directly to Pangboche, or take a detour to visit the ancient Gompa in Upper Pangboche – believed to be the oldest monastery in the Khumbu region. Pangboche itself is a stunning village, framed by Everest to the north, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kangtaiga to the east, the Kongde range to the south. Overnight Tea House. Trekking 5-6 hours.
Day 14: Pangboche to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
We begin by descending from Pangboche to the Imja Khola, then climbing gently through forested trails to reach Tengboche. if interested, we can visit the monks at the Tengboche monastery before we stop for lunch. After lunch, the trail winds through hillsides draped in rhododendron and juniper. We cross a bridge over the Dudh Koshi River, then follow the gorge as the path drops steeply through pine forests toward Sansa. Keep your eyes open for wildlife – mountain goats, colourful pheasants, and even snow leopards have been spotted in these woods. After passing a chorten, we arrive at the entrance to Namche Bazaar. Overnight Lodge. Trekking 5-6 hours.
Day 15: Namche to Lukla (2860m).
